We had a great vacation. Visited: March 2003

My friends and I had a great time. The staff was great and very friendly. By the second day here, they all knew our names.

Our room was basic, but comfortable. The weather was fantastic, but it rained on our last night here. We would definitely come back here.

The staff and the resort overall were phenomenal! Visited: March 2003

We have traveled a few times now, but this was our first trip to the Playa Dorada Resort. The two top things on our list, were the staff's pleasantness, and the cleanliness of the entire resort.

The food was great, the beaches were wonderful, the pools were very relaxing, and the daily and nightly entertainment was a lot of fun. However, out of the three a-la-carte dining rooms, the only one recommendable was the Italian restaurant.

I truly hate to complain because everything was wonderful, but the one area I would recommend for improvment, was the fact that there wasn't a disco or dance club. I would suggest they remove the Mexican restaurant and replace it with a dance bar. It seemed as though many people didn't seem to enjoy the Mexican a-la-carte.

Don't overdo it the first few days here. Slowly increase your sun, food and booze intake. And wait to buy souvenirs at the last possible moment, for everything was way overpriced. Do a lot of bartering before you buy.

I'd highly recommend this resort to anyone!

My wife and I loved our stay at this hotel. We enjoyed the people, the scenery and the events. We had an ocean view from our room and I enjoyed falling asleep to the ocean sounds. We went on two tours and found them to be very informative. We certainly would come back to this resort.

A great getaway for some sun. Visited: December 2002

This was the second trip to the Dominican Republic for my wife and me. We booked one week at the Occidental Playa Dorada and the following week at Occidental Flamenco Beach Resort. Our first week at Playa Dorada was fantastic.

The food was very good in the buffet area, and there was a large selection to choose from. Of the three specialty restaurants, Mexican was terrible, Steak was very good, Italian we didn't try.

After lounging by the beach the first couple days, we switched to going to, "the quiet pool" to lay out. It was much more relaxing. There was no loud music from water arobics blaring, just peace and quiet.

The room was great. It was very quiet and comfortable. The rooms that were closest to the beach were older, darker, and had a musty smell. I would definitely recommend staying in one of the newer buildings.

After our first week, we moved over the the Flamenco Beach Resort(about three blocks away). This turned out to be a short lived mistake. The beds were hard as rocks and selection of food wasn't as good. After staying two nights in two different rooms, we expressed our desire to return to the Playa Dorada. After a couple hours, the arrangements were made and we were happy again.

Evenings at Playa Dorada were very relaxing with the piano man's nightly entertainment in their open air lounge area. Daily walks on the beach were great. Lots of people approached us on the beach trying to sell us something, but they were not too pushy. Just say "no", and they go away.

The Dominican Republic, in my opinion, had the best value for the dollar. We had a wonderful time and are looking to try another resort later this year

The Play Dorada is fantastic! Visited: November 2002

This was my fifth visit to Playa Dorada Hotel. I liked it so much that I went to live in Puerto Plata for eight months visiting it regularly, as my husband, Alfonso, worked in the fun club.

All the staff at Playa Dorada are so friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend staying in this hotel from my experience of living here.

The choice of food in previous years has been excellent, but seems to have been cut back recently. Nightly entertainment is fabulous, and there's entertainment for all ages.

There's no disco in the hotel as there used to be four years ago, but Andromeda and Hemmingway's Bar at the plaza are a great night out.

There's no place better than Playa Dorada Hotel!

A wonderful place in the sun. Visited: August 2002

I got off the plane at 7:00 a.m. after two weeks at the Playa Dorada Hotel. It was excellent.

Everyone had a smile on their face, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Whilst there, my mother turned 70. They brought her breakfast in bed and arranged a birthday cake and singing waiters to put the top on her day.

Hello, Bettina (Guest Relations). Thanks for making our stay special. Hello Crazy Eddy, I love you for free!

I would recommend this accommodation to anyone for all ages. Our group ranged from 3 - 70.

An Average resort... Visited: March 2002
Posted by crzysxycu
I just returned from a week's holiday in Puerto Plata. My girlfriend and I stayed at the Playa Dorado Hotel and Casino. The resort itself was very beautiful and to our surprise, very large. Although we arrived quite late 10:00 p.m., we were welcomed with special cocktails. Our room was very nice and kept very tidy. The bellhop helped us with our luggage and showed us to our room. He was very nice.

However, we found our overall stay at the Playa Dorado Hotel to be quite disappointing. The beach didn't seem to be maintained properly. There were twigs and branches along the sand and the water was very cloudy. We opted to try another beach. We went to Sousua, three days in a row. The beach was spectacular - not even the slightest bit comparable to Playa Dorado. There are restaurants, shops and many locals sell homemade food along the beach.

We found the food at the Playa Dorado hotel to be very dissatisfying and very bland. A suggestion would be to keep the buffet style lunches and dinners in the air-conditioned restaurants. Foods, such as cheese, left out in the hot afternoon temperatures is not very appetizing. Every time we went to eat, the cheese had moisture bubbles on it. The only pleasantries I remember about the food were the delicious desserts. Mocha flavoured mouse, caramel bananas and spiced layer cake.

The hotel staff at the front desk were less than satisfactory with delivering messages. My friend and I were two single women traveling together and would occasionally leave messages for one another (e.g. meeting for dinner). I received one message for the whole week. We opted to write messages for one another and leave them in our room.

Our room was very lovely and kept very clean. However, there seemed to be a shortage on face towels and the drain in the shower was clogged.

More than we expected! Visited: February 2002
Posted by kinches
From the time we checked in to the time we left, we were treated excellently.

Our room overlooked the back pool and there was very little noise in this area day or night. We could leave our windows open all the time (there were no bugs).

The grounds were very clean, as were the rooms. The rooms were more than adequate as we were only in them to sleep and change clothes. The only noticeable items lacking were face cloths. We had to ask housekeeping for them every day or we didn't get them.

I've never been anywhere before that the staff seemed to be so happy and friendly. It was a very rare occasion that we met a member of the staff and they wouldn't give a big smile and a happy "Hola".

Security at the resort was as good as any of the airports that we passed through to get here! There were police patroling the beach and security guards within earshot at all times.

The nightly entertainment included something for everyone.

The bank in the hotel didn't give as good as exchange on your money as the bank down the street in the shopping area, but being located so close made up for the difference.

If I was ever fortunate enough to return to this part of the Dominican Republic, I would not hesitate to stay here.

As a note, I sat next to a person from Newfoundland on the way down and it was his third time in Playa Dorada, and his second stay at this resort. When I asked him why, he said there was no reason to go to any other property as this one had everything he was looking for.

Eight wonderful days Visited: July 2001

We just returned from a lovely trip. The resort is right on the beach. Mostly Europeans stay here. There’s a very congenial staff and food and drinks galore.

The "Fun Club" is the activity section for kids and there’s also lots for adults if you’re interested. There is a rhythm to the place that you learn quickly. Get towels by 8:00a.m. and stake out your lounge chairs for the day. Sign up for special activities like horseback riding and sailing, which have limited spots. Then, nightly entertainment ranges from shows to audience participation-spoofs.

Rooms are modest but clean and air-conditioned. Refill your water bottle from dining room taps. Private tennis lessons from Juan were a deal! Cool breezes are predictable in the afternoon. I took my wife and 15-year old. It was heaven.

Awesome Hotel and Wonderful Staff Visited: May 2001
Posted by drlnhy10_
As first time travelers, we were nervous and apprehensive about traveling to Dominican Republic. Upon arrival, most of that nervousness was relieved, as the hotel itself was beautiful, clean and much nicer than we could have imagined.

After getting settled in then we had the opportunity to meet many staff members at the hotel and all were friendly and very helpful, especially Robert at the buffet restaurant and Caesar in entertainment. We enjoyed our stay so much we plan to go back to Playa Dorada in January of 2002.

Fantastic, helpfull staff, beautiful resort Visited: May 2001

I was very impressed with the location of Playa Dorada Resort; it was very impressive in every way!

The employees (each and everyone) are to be commended. I never saw an unhappy face from any staff member during the whole seven days I stayed here. Everyone was so friendly to my sister, her friend and I that we found it very difficult to leave and come back to Canada. I felt like royalty the whole time.

Speaking on behalf of the three of us, we will all be back and next time take more members of our families so they too can see what a beautiful resort this is. Playa Dorada Resort is definitely the place to stay in the Dominican Republic.

A nice place under the sun. Visited: February 2001

We spent a week here and really enjoyed our stay. Our room had an ocean view and we did not regret paying a bit more for that. It was very clean but pretty basic (we only spent nights there anyway).

Cannot complain about the food, and we would be definitely be the first in line to do that if we had to. La Palma dining hall had a variety of foods to offer. Breakfasts were usually the same. Lunch was the best there; it was more complete--soups, pasta, meat, vegetables, fruits, and lots of cakes, and thankfully no junk food. Dinners usually were as good as the lunches--there was a variety to choose from most of the time. We only ate at the Mexican restaurant and did not like it. There are three restaurants at the resort and you can get a reservation for one of each one time only.

The two pools were very nice and clean. The ocean view pool was very nice but very crowded, so we spent most of the time by the Cool Pool, which was also right by the snack bar.

Nightly entertainment did not excite us the first night and we spent the rest of the evenings in the casino. There was the absence of a nice Disco (that was a major minus for us). Disco at the nearby Flamenco was terrible. Why did they call it disco, we still cannot understand. Crazy Moon at the Paradise was a torture to the tympanic membrane, and we left as fast as we could, but the music there was pretty good.

If you go here, you won't regret it.

Absolutely fantastic! Visited: May 2000

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay here and found the staff to be most helpful and efficient—always showing a smiling face. The room was nice but basic, but we spent most of the day in the sun, so it didn't matter.

The food was fantastic and there was never a shortage of variety, which is something I really enjoy. However, the nightlife was dire with only one nightclub at the resort and I would give that a miss. I did enjoy the night entertainment with the cabarets/shows and everybody got involved.

I would definitely recommend a holiday at this resort.

Our one week stay in the Dominican Republic was far too short. The resort was fantastic with friendly staff, plentiful food and refreshments, and comfortable, clean lodgings.

The beach was beautiful, the ocean floor was pure sand. We highly recommend this resort to anyone considering it.

Great place to relax in the sun Visited: January 2000
Posted by ea_lalonde
My husband and I stayed for a week and had a wonderful time. The beach was excellent and the water warm and great for swimming. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. Rooms were basic, but comfortable and clean.

There were two pools in the complex: the "fun pool" (games, shows, music) and the "cool pool," quiet and serene. Our room overlooked the "cool pool" and it was very peaceful.

The food was average - variety was good sometimes, not so good others, but there was always plenty to fill our plates. Waits were never too long in the dining room and there were also 3 restaurants where reservations were required. NOTE: Bring a 1-litre bottle of water with you. The water in the room is not drinkable and you can refill your bottle for free at the bars.

Local shops were not a bargain (there's a shopping centre nearby)- the best prices in the neighborhood were in the gift shops.

All in all, they took very good care of us!

NOTE: Not under control of the hotel, but mosquitos were plentiful - bring repellant if you're a mosquito magnet like me - they come out at dawn and dusk, just like at home!

Excellent experience. Visited: November 1999

I've done lots of traveling but no trip was quite as exciting as the one I took to the Playa Doradas Resort. It far exceeded my expectations in quality and comfort. In a true five-star resort I look for one thing: that each and every area looks like a resort on it's own, from the bathrooms to the hallways to the bar. If each can seem luxurious individually then the concept has been achieved. Everything at the Playa Dorada was just this way. I’m returning in the spring!

have stayed at this hotel twice and you truly cannot find a more beautiful and friendly resort for the cost! Both vacations I stayed 14 days for approximately $1200.00 Canadian dollars...What a steal!!! This is a hotel that can cater to every type of person or any type of vacation that you want to have, whether it be relaxing or dancing and partying until your feet hurt!

The entertainment at the hotel every night is phenomenal! The staff were the friendliest I have ever experienced but just remember that a Dominicans 5 minutes is a Canadians 45 minutes, so if you need something I suggest you request it with lots of time to spare.

But this is truly one of the charming things about the Dominicans, the pace is slow which is an awesome switch to our everyday life here. The Dominicans give you a refreshing look at your priorities, teaching us to be thankful for each day as it comes and to appreciate the important things in life such as health, as they do not have many material things.

I could go on and on but I think I will just say that if you ever get the opportunity to go don't miss out, this is truly paradise!!!
