Great hotel for the price and a great breakfast! Visited: August 2001 |

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Hispaniola and it was very pleasant. The staff was great and very respectful. The room service ladies were great. I even visited one of their houses and she cooked for us; it was great.
The only complaint I had was the casino service. All the waitresses had an attitude, as if they wished they didn't work there. We had an incident while we were there. We played some slots that apparently we weren't supposed to play and they made a big scene to the point that they were screaming at us and telling us we had to pay whatever coins we took; what an embarrassing moment. After all of this, I complained and did not receive an apology!
I highly recommend this hotel, but if you want to play the slots, I definitely recommend that you visit another casino!

A nice hotel for the price. Visited: March 2001 |

My brother and myself stayed at Hotel Hispaniola in Santo Domingo and were pleased with our stay. The staff was absolutely great, bilingual and helpful. The rooms were nice, but old; you'll have a TV with plenty of American channels and decent beds. The room was cleaned everyday and never felt at risk for theft at all. The rooms are a little run down, but this was more a result of their age than an unwillingness to keep them nice.
This hotel has an awesome and huge pool. The hotel casino was top notch as well, located directly in the lobby. I was quite pleased with every aspect of the hotel, and had no complaints at all. In addition, you can use the Hotel Santo Domingo, which is across the street. Everything at night goes on at Hotel Hispaniola anyway. The nightclub was really fun, although the locals didn't start to come in until around 1am. The dancing was fun and the place was packed with very nicely dressed people.
The only drawback to this hotel was its location in Santo Domingo; it’s not a very clean city. Don't expect to lie around on sandy beaches and take strolls along the beach. There is no beach, only cliffs (which are actually quite pretty). However, if this is your first trip to Santo Domingo, expect filth, smog and smell. You cannot get into the sea at all. You must take a taxi into the beach area named Boca Chica. Do not rent a car; the locals drive absolutely crazy. Taxis are reasonable and the hotel provides them at a reasonable cost; plus, they are safe.
In any event, I would definitely recommend this hotel. You'll spend some cash on taxis to see what you want to see, but again, it is reasonable.

People of color should avoid the Hispaniola Hotel Visited: January 2001 |

My boyfriend and I just came back from a five-day stay at the Hispaniola Hotel and it was the worst vacation we've ever taken. I was very excited when a travel agent suggested that I stay at the Hispaniola especially when I visited it's web site.
We arrived at the hotel to a room that had one working lamp, a broken shower fawcet, dirty curtain that was half-hung on the floor, a remote control for the TV that didn't always work and a balcony that faced the dumpster. When we asked the front desk staff to change our room they politely told us that they were all booked but would keep looking for another room for us as soon as one became available. That was fine, I thanked them and went sightseeing.
The next day I went back to the front desk because by then I was sick and tired of getting dressed in the dark, the front desk staff again told me that they were booked even though the hotel seemed pretty empty. Meanwhile, a white couple came and complained of something that wasn't working in their room and the front desk staff was falling all over themselves trying to accommodate them.
On my third day here, I went back to the front desk and told them that I can no longer stay in this room and this time they were very dismissive and appeared annoyed. It got to the point that we tried to stay out of the hotel as much as possible because our room was so unbearable and we had no way of changing hotels because a large portion of our money was stolen while sightseeing.
The day we checked out, my boyfriend and I were surprised because they handed us a phone bill of a hundred and twenty pesos. We made no phone calls from our room because we purchased a calling card and used the pay phone in the lobby of the hotel. The front desk person claimed that it was our bill and that we must pay it since he had our credit card on file. I had no choice but to pay for phone calls that I didn't make. When I tried to tell him in my broken Spanish and then in English, he became very annoyed.
I felt that the treatment that I received was markedly different due to the fact that my boyfriend and I are dark-skinned black. Having traveled a lot, I can't remember the last time I was treated so horribly by a hotel.
I have to say though, that the men working in the elevator were the only people who made us feel welcome in that hotel. The rest of the staff looked at us like we didn't belong, and made sure that we felt that way. So I would urge anyone of color not to stay at the Hispaniola because their customer service skills only extend to people of European descent. |

Wonderful service, beautiful people! Visited: August 2000 |

Wonderful service and beautiful people, those are the exact words that I used when leaving the Hispaniola Hotel after two of my stays here. The first lasted a month from July through August of 1999 and I said the same after I visited in August of 2001.
The service provided by the employees at this hotel was great! They cordially helped whenever we needed them. They would run errands for us when asked to and at times they even helped bring up the baby carriages and towels when returning from the swimming pool. The gentlemen and ladies there always went out of their way in making our stay a pleasant one.
My family and I enjoyed the stay at Hispaniola and its accompanying service of Hotel Santo Domingo. Allowing me to check my e-mail when possible was more than what I expected. I have no complaints and will be staying at the Hispaniola once again when I return to Santo Domingo on January this upcoming year.

I have been staying at this nice, smaller hotel for years and always recommend it to my friends and business colleagues. It is a great place to stay and conveniently located yet away from the crowds. |

This hotel is located in a good area of the city. They serve a tasty Dominican breakfast, which will make you remember to go back to Santo Domingo.
They have very good service. They have trained employees in the elevators, which may look as if the operation is slower than usual since we are adapted to the rush of the big cities and to do it ourselves, however after the first day you can realize that it is an enjoyable experience.
The environment is relaxing and makes you feel as though you are in an antique royal palace. |
